UNC Charlotte’s Center for Precision Metrology lab is central to education and research efforts in the areas of precision engineering and metrology. With a wide variety of high-end measurement instruments and a customized environment, engineering experts work to support American advanced manufacturing through research, workforce development and industry partnerships.

Industry Affiliates

Formal partnerships between CPM and external organizations, “Affiliate members,” are key to the metrology research advancements. CPM facilitates collaboration between Affiliate members and university researchers on projects that involve actual manufacturing challenges, developing solutions that are then shared among the members. The Center also engages in non-Affiliate research supported by the National Science Foundation, national laboratories and other government agencies.

These Affiliates also support our graduates, often hiring them for career positions within their organizations immediately after or even before graduation.  In recent years, our graduates have secured positions with NIST, Intel, Corning and more.

Current Industry Affiliates

Members of CPM’s Industry Affiliates meet semi-annually to review progress of the projects within the program. Student researchers present their work and have the opportunity to discuss the technical details individually with industry leaders. In addition, new projects are proposed by faculty who collaborate with the industrial members to identify key projects that address generic and specific concerns in manufacturing metrology. Those projects which receive sufficient support of the members are initiated in the next year.
